Bachmann Silver Series HO 17601 Pennsylvania 40' quad hopper car already assembled is based on the ones built in 1920 and P62 in 1963.
A hopper car is a type of railroad freight car used to transport loose bulk commodities such as coal, ore, grain and track ballast. This type of car is distinguished from a gondola car in that it has opening doors on the underside or on the sides to discharge its cargo. The development of the hopper car went along with the development of automated handling of such commodities, with automated loading and unloading facilities. Hopper cars have been used by railways worldwide whenever automated cargo handling has been desired.
The increased use of cars for unit trains and other dedicated services saw a brief revival of interest in gondola-type cars in the early 1960s, but this was soon swamped by a tidal wave of 100-ton triple and quad hoppers in the late 1960s and 1970s.
