FrankenDie: The Party Game for the Madly Insane

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

This is some good news!  Local board game creators and enthusiast (and close, personal friends of Toys on Fire) have started their Kickstarter project for the board game FrankenDie: The Party Game for the Madly Insane!  Marquis, Lucas, and Al have put together a very professional looking product here, although I wouldn’t expect anything less from these guys!  So if you want to support some local guys, or just enjoy the horror theme, then give these guys some of your cash!

Seriously though, these are a really nice bunch of dudes who try to improve the board game community around Ottawa.  You can’t go wrong!

Ottawa Children’s Festival Coming June 1st-5th

Monday, May 16th, 2011
June 1, 2011toJune 5, 2011

The Ottawa Children’s Festival is coming soon and Toys on Fire will be there at the Family Games Tent once again! The boys and girls from Game Summit will be there as well with lots of cool games and activities for everyone. This is a really cool opportunity to have some family fun down by the War Museum as the weather gets warmer and there really is something for everybody. We hope to see you there! Admission is FREE!

Here is some cool footage of the games tent area from last year!

Have not heard of the Festival? Here’s a little background from their website:

About

The Ottawa International Children’s Festival was established in 1985 and is an annual celebration of the best in live performing arts for children. For over two decades the OICF has presented an abundance of award-winning artists from around the globe and made wide-eyed children out of attendees of all ages. The festival has experienced a steady – and encouraging – increase in attendance over the last several years. Festival attendance has increased from 5,000 in 2001 to over 20,000 in 2010 – an increase of more than 15,000 visitors in 9 years.

Our mandate is to create a variety of programs for children aged four to fifteen, focusing on enriching school curriculum and promoting the arts as an integral part of children’s education.

We offer a five-day festival in early June, hosted on the grounds of Lebreton Flats Park and we use venues at the Canadian War Museum. We also present a season of family programming during the fall and winter at various locations throughout the city.

The OICF provides a unique opportunity for children and their families to experience the rich heritage of other cultures right in their own backyard. We strive to present work that excites and challenges audiences of all ages, and the festival prides itself on developing and producing award winning programming that comes to us from across Canada and around the world.

What Makes the Festival Unique?

  • For five magical days, local, national and international artists create an extraordinary cultural community for children.
  • We have hosted performers from Brazil, Kenya, Peru, Holland, France, England, Germany, Denmark and China, as well as artists from around Canada.
  • The atmosphere is family-friendly and relaxed with a variety of times and dates.
  • The festival is designed to accommodate trips made by school classes as well as families. Weekday performances take place during school hours when there are thousands of students and their teachers in attendance, with plenty of great seats also available for the general public.
  • What we’re most proud of, though, is the high quality of professional and international artistry featured in the Festival– adventurous performances that stir the imaginations of all ages. The OICF is the only performing arts festival dedicated to young people in central and eastern Ontario.

The Festival has been awarded:

  • The Lieutenant Governor’s Award for the arts (2002)
  • The Community Recognition Award from the Council for the Arts in Ottawa
  • Honourary patronage by Her Excellency Governor General Michaëlle Jean (2006)

A tradition since 1985, this cherished regional festival continues to flourish. We continue to run a successful event and have been recognized for enriching the cultural experiences of thousands of young people, their families, and community groups over the years.

Barrhaven Board Game Nights at Toys on Fire: Next Meeting Monday July 5th 6:30PM – 10:00PM

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Barrhaven Board Game Nights
Thanks to everybody who came and had fun at our last meeting. Also a big thank you to Marquis and Game Summit for bringing some sweet prizes for our attendees. I guess I will be seeing most of you at game summit this coming weekend at the Sportsplex. It looks like Steve might even bring his Warhammer army and get jiggy with the 40k tournament.

Below are the details for our next meeting!

Next Meeting: Monday July 5th 6:30PM – 10:00PM. (If attendance keeps on increasing we will be switching to bi-weekly soon!)

Last Meeting we got to play: Railways of Mexico, Last Night on Earth, Small World, Space Dealer, Zombie Dice, Coliseum, Catacombs, and a whole lot of Neuroshima Hex!

The Setup: Again we will have 4 large tables setup with potential seating for 16-20 people indoors. As the warm summer nights are on the horizon, we are considering a partially outdoor setup involving gazebos/lights for some more tables at a future meeting to accommodate larger numbers of people.

Food / Drink: We have cold cans of pop and water bottles available for $1.00 each and microwave popcorn available for $2.00 and assorted candy/gum for those who don’t want to bring their own. (Please refrain from snacks that could be damaging to the board games like cheetos etc.) Crackers, chips, cookies, veggies etc are fine.

One final note: While we want as many people to play the games they want to play as possible, it does mean we may not have either enough interest or players to play certain games. If you come with the intention of playing a specific game, please do not be discouraged if we do not play it this time. We want everyone to have an open mind about trying new games they haven’t played before.

Hope to see you all There!

Please RSVP and let us know any questions/suggestions you might have in this thread.
