DC’s New Logo

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

So DC’s new logo started popping up around the web about a week ago, leaving many people scratching their head.

What’s up with this thing? Did DC turn into a sticker company? I liked how modern it looks, but I had no idea what the peeled edge represented. The page of a comic book turning?

Now the logo all makes sense.

It represents secret identities! The idea is that they’ll stylize the logo for each of their different titles. Right now, the only ones that are obvious on their own (for me, anyway) are the Green Lantern and Watchmen logos. It’ll be more obvious once they’re on the covers of the comics.

My friend Cory summed the feeling up nicely: “Really didn’t like it too much when I first saw it. Now it really does make sense. Well played DC.”

Well played indeed.

(Also, I got all the stuff from bleedingcool.com, which is a great website for comic and movie news, but not really great for kids. Use caution, potentially NSFW.)

DC Rules October

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

According to Comic Book Resources (who got their info from Diamond) “50.97 percent in units sold — up from 35.74 percent and 43.04 percent the previous month.”  That means that more than one of every two comics sold last month was published by DC.  Rock on, DC, it’s good to see all that hard work and mind-boggling reboots are paying off.  I’m contributing to their sales by buying Scott Snyder’s Batman.  It’s a really good comic and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to read about Batman.  Hopefully we’ll get to see some Batman action figures soon!

Reading Comics on My Phone

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Some interesting news for the comic world – as I’m sure a lot of you guys are aware, DC is wiping out a bunch of titles and relaunching them at issue #1 for what they have dubbed “The New 52″.  That’s right, 52 new issue #1 titles from DC, with more to be relaunched after the fact.  This is all part of a new strategy that also includes more focus on digital comics.  This means that, for around the same price as what you’d pay in the store, you’ll be able to get the digital copy downloaded to your digital device on ship date.  That’s pretty cool.  DC just launched their very own comiXology Android app to assure that all digital users get their comics.

Being a new Android user myself, I am always eager to try out all sorts of new apps, and an app that lets me read comics is awesome.  What’s even more awesome is that I don’t need a tablet to do it, I can read these comics all on my phone!  If you’re concerned about reading an entire comic page on a tiny phone screen, fear not, it goes panel by panel, and lets you rotate your phone accordingly so as to accommodate from the different panel sizes.  And for the really big panels, it will zoom to important areas first before letting you see the whole image.  It’s actually quite cinematic.  It also lets you zoom in on all the parts, in case you want to see things in greater detail!

If you have an Android product, I recommend this app highly.  There’s also a ton of free comics to pick from as well.  Don’t be shy!
