Thanks to everybody who came and had fun at our last meeting. Also a big thank you to Marquis and Game Summit for bringing some sweet prizes for our attendees. I guess I will be seeing most of you at game summit this coming weekend at the Sportsplex. It looks like Steve might even bring his Warhammer army and get jiggy with the 40k tournament.
Below are the details for our next meeting!
Next Meeting: Monday July 5th 6:30PM – 10:00PM. (If attendance keeps on increasing we will be switching to bi-weekly soon!)
Last Meeting we got to play: Railways of Mexico, Last Night on Earth, Small World, Space Dealer, Zombie Dice, Coliseum, Catacombs, and a whole lot of Neuroshima Hex!
The Setup: Again we will have 4 large tables setup with potential seating for 16-20 people indoors. As the warm summer nights are on the horizon, we are considering a partially outdoor setup involving gazebos/lights for some more tables at a future meeting to accommodate larger numbers of people.
Food / Drink: We have cold cans of pop and water bottles available for $1.00 each and microwave popcorn available for $2.00 and assorted candy/gum for those who don’t want to bring their own. (Please refrain from snacks that could be damaging to the board games like cheetos etc.) Crackers, chips, cookies, veggies etc are fine.

Settlers of Catan is a popular board game created by Klaus Teuber. Since its first publication in 1995, the game has sold 15 million copies. Last year, Wired magazine called it a “perfect” game; we were not exaggerating.
Catan will cost $6.50 and support two- to four-player online games.
Xbox 360 owners have enjoyed playing a different version of Catan, developed by Big Huge Games, since 2007.
The PlayStation version Catan was developed by Game Republic, the Japanese developer responsible for games like Genji and Folklore.
But don’t hold that against them. The videogame developer has a little known sideline in board game design. A handful of its tabletop offerings, such as Owner’s Choice and Shadow Hunters, have been localized for American gamers by Z-Man Games.
Gamers in Europe and Japan have had access to the Game Republic version of Catan for more than a year.
Toys on Fire joined in with Game Summit and many other organizations in making a fun filled weekend for children over at Lebreton Flats (near the War Museum). Here are some pictures of the event that went from May 19th-30th.
Thanks to everybody who came and had fun at our last meeting. Also a big thank you to Marquis and Game Summit for bringing some games including Catan 3D Collector’s Edition for everyone to try out.
Next Meeting: Monday June 7th 6:30PM – 10:00PM.
We are hoping to play: Power Grid, Puerto Rico, Battle Lore,
Mystery Express, Small World, Manhattan, Chaos in the Old World and many more options available.
It looks like Steve might be bringing Battle Lore for this one, so for those of you who want to try it should be available this time.
The Setup: Again we will have 4 large tables setup with potential seating for 16-20 people indoors. As the warm summer nights are on the horizon, we are considering a partially outdoor setup involving gazebos/lights for some more tables at a future meeting to accommodate larger numbers of people.

Thanks to everybody who came and had fun at our last meeting. We were lucky enough to have 16 Guests on our very first night!
Next Meeting: Monday May 10th 6:30PM – 10:00PM. We are doing these monthly for now as the next two months for us will be very busy in store as we prepare for and celebrate our Store’s 5 Year Anniversary.
We are hoping to try out: Power Grid, Puerto Rico, Battle Lore,
Memoir ’44, Arkham Horror, Small World, Manhattan, Chaos in the Old World and many more options available.
Currently we don’t have an open copy of Battle Lore. Anyone who has this and would like to bring it would be a life-saver.
The Setup: Again we will have 4 large tables setup with potential seating for 16-20 people.
Food / Drink: As these meetings take place in our store there can’t be any form of alcohol. However, we do have cold cans of pop and water bottles available for $1.00 each and microwave popcorn available for $2.00 and assorted candy/gum for those who don’t want to bring their own. Alright guys! We’ve been promising a board game night for a while now and we finally deliver! Next Monday will be the trial run of our Barrhaven Board Game Night! So if you’re looking to play a board game next week, Toys on Fire’s the place to do it.
Our first night will be this coming Monday, April 12th at 6:30 – 10:00 PM. (We are extending our store hours later for this night)
Games: We are thinking of setting up 3 8-foot tables so we want to run 1 or 2 larger games and 2 medium sized games with fillers inbetween. We have lots of games to choose from, our rentals are available for play and some others that the staff will bring. This will be a very open format event and you are welcome to come with your friends and play as you like. You are also welcome to bring one of your own games, and even teach it to others if you would like. Please let us know which games you would like to see so we can make sure we have all the rules down ahead of time.
We’ll have a bunch of board games here for people to try out, including:
- Days of Wonder’s Ticket to Ride Europe
- Days of Wonder’s Mystery Express
- Eagle Games’ Railways of the World
- Z-Man Games’ Neuroshima Hex
- Flying Frog’s Last Night on Earth
Food / Drink: As this is taking place in our store there can’t be any form of alcohol. However, we do have cold cans of pop available for $1.00 each and microwave popcorn available for $2.00 for those who don’t want to bring their own. (Please refrain from snacks that could be damaging to the board games like cheetos etc.) Crackers, chips, cookies, veggies etc are fine.
If you would like to request we bring a game, feel free to shoot us an e-mail and we’ll see if we can oblige you.
One final note: While we want as many people to play the games they want to play as possible, it does mean we may not have either enough interest or players to play certain games. If you come with the intention of playing a specific game, please do not be discouraged if we do not play it this time. Just a reminder that the 2009 Summer Game Summit is coming up soon! Some of you are wondering what that is right now, and I’ll tell you. It’s Ottawa’s bi-yearly classic gaming convention. Good old fashioned dice rolling or minature moving or card playing. It’s fun for everyone, with a plethora of board games for people to rent out and try! There’s also lots of Warhammer, W40k and Lord of the Rings tournaments for those with miniatures armies itching for a fight, and an RPG den for people to learn how to play D&D ! I’ve also heard there will be Pokemon and Chaotic tournaments as well. For those more artistically inclined, there’s (miniatures) painting workshops, where you get your very own little miniature that you can practice your painting on and keep after! There’s gonna be loads of paints and and paintbrushes for people to use. Of course, the most obvious reason to go is because we’re gonna be there!
Can you believe we’ve actually done this? We made a video newsletter! We’re posting it on the blog so all of you folks who were too scared to sign up for the real newsletter will know what you’ve been missing. Also, one thing I missed is we will be giving 15% off the Russ stuff if you’re on the newsletter (present the coupon) and 10% if you’re not. Got it? GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD! Now feast your eyes on the horror that is the TOYS ON FIRE VIDEO NEWSLETTER!!
After an almost 2 month drought on this game, the new shipment has finally hit North America, just in time to be ready for the highly anticipated upcoming expansion Dominion: Intrigue. Rio Grande’s Dominion is arriving back in the store this afternoon, with all it’s over 500 cards of goodness! Don’t miss it this time!

And if you have no idea, what I am talking about, it’s the new heavily hyped, long awaited, family friendly fantasy adventure game from Days of Wonder games. (The publisher that brought you Ticket to Ride, Memoir 44, Battlelore, and Shadows over Camelot. These guys don’t release games often, so when they do it is a big deal. It has to be good!) The game is currently the Hottest topic on www.BoardGameGeek.com and has already attained the Rank of 187 after only being officially released 5 days ago!
That is right, everyone’s favourite Reiner Knizia 2 player classic card game of exploration, adventure, and treasure is now available in a full 3-4 player board game of the same name! Even before it’s release in North America it had already won the ever coveted Spiel des Jahres award for 2008(Game of the Year).
The game is again published by reliable Rio Grande Games and features many mechanics familiar to the Card Game Lost Cities.
With a top notch designer, excellent publisher, and a prestigious award behind it this game is guaranteed to become a classic in years to come. Also, fan of the original game may enjoy this as it add more players to the experience.
Another Family Day has come and gone, and by golly was it wonderful. What more can you ask for but a day off work and time with your family. Well, we celebrated this year by having a big board game party, and boy was it a success. I can’t wait until next year. There was even a gift exchange!

Published By: Z-Man Games # of Players: 2-4 Playing Time: 45 Minutes Mfg Suggested Ages: 10 and up
Description: Four diseases have broken out in the world and it is up to a team of specialists in various fields to find cures before mankind is wiped out.
Players must plan their strategy to work to their characters’ strengths before the diseases overwhelm the world. For example, the Operations Specialist can build research stations, which are needed to find cures for the diseases. The Scientist needs only 4 cards of a particular disease to cure it instead of the normal 5. But the diseases are breaking out fast and time is running out: the team must try to stem the tide of infection in diseased areas while developing cures. If disease spreads uncontrolled, the players all lose. If they find the cures, they win.
The board shows earth with some big population centres. On each turn a player can use four actions to travel, cure, discover and build. Cards are used for this but the deck also contains Epidemics…
Dominion is in, the game has shot to position 9 in the ranks of BoardGameGeek.com’s database of over 20,000 games in the first couple of weeks after its release in North America. Come get your copy today before they all sell out!
In Dominion, each player starts with an identical, very small deck of cards. In the center of the table is a selection of other cards the players can “buy” as they can afford them. Through their selection of cards to buy, and how they play their hands as they draw them, the players construct their deck on the fly, striving for the most efficient path to the precious victory points by game end.
You are a monarch, like your parents before you, a ruler of a small pleasant kingdom of rivers and evergreens. Unlike your parents, however, you have hopes and dreams! You want a bigger and more pleasant kingdom, with more rivers and a wider variety of trees. You want a Dominion! In all directions lie fiefs, freeholds, and feodums. All are small bits of land, controlled by petty lords and verging on anarchy. You will bring civilization to these people, uniting them under your banner.
But wait! It must be something in the air; several other monarchs have had the exact same idea. You must race to get as much of the unclaimed land as possible, fending them off along the way. To do this you will hire minions, construct buildings, spruce up your castle, and fill the coffers of your treasury. Your parents wouldn’t be proud, but your grandparents would be delighted.
Dominion is not a CCG, but the play of the game is similar to the construction and play of a CCG deck. The game comes complete with roughly 500 cards. You select 10 of the 25 Kingdom card types to include in any given play — leading to immense variety.
Ssssh, I’m hiding in the back. For some reason, we ordered more Killer Bunnies, and they’ve been very …rowdy. I heard some even talking about me, making threats on my life! I can’t work like this, so please come buy one. I’ll do the handling, but just get them out of store! Oh no, here they come!
It’s completely addictive, yet deceptively simple. Tetris, the world’s most popular video game, is now a 3D cube with over 14,000 solutions. We dare you to find just one! The new Tetris Cube is the next big “craze” that’s sure to drive you wild! It provides hours, days and even weeks on non-stop fun and is the “granddaddy” of brain teasers. Use the Tetris Cube as an in-school educational tool to provide children with a series of “problem solving” situations and make learning a fun and rewarding challenge. It also assists in the development of spatial awareness.
In this Carcassonne game, players begin as the early settlers of the United States did on the east coast of America. As they explore westward, they build towns, farms, roads, and compete to score more points than the others players. As exploration moves to the west, players who are slow to complete the features they have started will find themselves left behind – with no points!
This game plays separate from the other Carcassonne series games and is an excellent addition to any gamers collection.
The rumors are true. A new gaming convention is hitting Ottawa this month and you all had better be there! The wicked part, IT’S AT THE WAR MUSEUM!
Toys on Fire will be there and we have our own special pavilion where we will be demoing and vending all your favourite games including the famous Agricola, Memoir 44, Aquaretto, Arham Horror, Ticket to Ride, Settlers, Carcassonne, Blokus and many, many more. There will be door prizes, tournaments, special events, and a guarantee of lots of fun for everyone.
The Floor plan. Complete with Marketplace, War Room, D&D Alley, Warhammer Tables, Artist alley and Toys on Fire Board Game Pavilion.
What: Hobbyists, board gamers, role-players and more will converge this fall to roll their dice and play their hearts out at Game Summit’s table-top gaming convention at the Canadian War Museum. If you love table-top gaming, bring your A-game to Game Summit’s premier.

Also, its the Diamond Anniversary Edition, whatever that means? It features a folding carry case and ridges around each block so that your letters don’t slide around. Shibby!
