FrankenDie Just Got Funded!

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

A celebratory pat on the back goes out to our friends Marquis, Lucas, and Al for achieving their funding goal for their game, FrankenDie, which I have blogged about before. Now you may think to yourself, “Wow, they did it! I guess that’s all finished now! Case closed!” and then maybe slap your hands together like your wiping away some imaginary dust. Well, I’m delighted to inform you that such is not the case; this cased in most definitely not closed! If you notice on their Kickstarter page, there’s still 6 days to go! In these last 6 days is where stuff starts to get interesting…

They’ve already promised us a bunch of extras for reaching the second goal of $15,000, but the further we reach beyond that, the more stuff they have to promise us! Are you catching my drift? Here, just take a look at what happened for D-Day Dice:

  • Started out with a modest goal of $13,000
  • When funding reach $40,000, they offered the first gift
  • When funding reach $45,000 they offered the second gift
  • Fast forward to $170,000 and suddenly I’m bidding $100 because I’m going to get 3 copies of the game, and 11(!) gifts with each copy!

These aren’t little rinky-dink gifts either. They’re going to send me ton of expansions, a special tin box, special dice, a really wicked-sweet tote-bag to carry it all in, and an 11th gift they haven’t even figured out yet, because, really, what do you get the backer that already has everything?

FrankenDie could easily be the next D-Day Dice. I didn’t know much about D-Day Dice when I bid, but it just comes with so much swag that I couldn’t pass it up. FrankenDie, I’ve played and I know for a fact that it’s good. I know that your kids will like it, I know that your non-board gaming friends will like it, and I know that you – yes, you, Mr./Mrs. Hardcore-Gamer – will find that somewhere in your Columbia Games-hardened heart of yours to find at least some shred of joy in playing it. It’s simple, it’s fast, it’s hectic, and it’s fun! What more could you ask for?

Oh, and it’s local, you got to support the local stuff!

So what do you say, ladies and gents, why don’t we get the word out there and earn us some more FrankenDie swag!

-Chris

Risk: Legacy (It’s Crazy)

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Guys, I didn’t realise what Risk: Legacy was all about, but it’s actually crazy.

You know how when you’re playing normal Risk, it’s the same thing every time?  You can count on certain cards to come up, or certain countries to be central to a winning strategy. Well, Risk: Legacy can change all of that. You see, Risk: Legacy remembers. It will remember that a country you decided to blow up in game 1 is still uninhabitable by game 4.  It will remember who betrayed you in game 3.  Certain cards will be lost over a number of games and certain cards will be gained.  By game 10, your board, factions, and cards will be radically different than game 1.

This is such a good idea.

We all knew Risk was fun, but it just didn’t have that element of depth that these newer games have integrated so well. Now I believe Risk: Legacy has a fighting chance at being in your permanent game roster, and not just be relegated to the nostalgia pile.

Oh yeah, and we have it in store right now.

FrankenDie: The Party Game for the Madly Insane

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

This is some good news!  Local board game creators and enthusiast (and close, personal friends of Toys on Fire) have started their Kickstarter project for the board game FrankenDie: The Party Game for the Madly Insane!  Marquis, Lucas, and Al have put together a very professional looking product here, although I wouldn’t expect anything less from these guys!  So if you want to support some local guys, or just enjoy the horror theme, then give these guys some of your cash!

Seriously though, these are a really nice bunch of dudes who try to improve the board game community around Ottawa.  You can’t go wrong!

5 x 7 Wonders

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Have you tried out 7 Wonders yet? This is the best card game I have ever played. We just got 5 more copies. The best things about 7 Wonders is it’s simple enough that anyone can play, it can be played in about half an hour, and it also has enough depth that it can be played over and over again. This and Catan are the only games I’ve played where I’ve been able to do 4 games in a row – and I still want to play more! Get this game now!

Axe Cop and Munchkin

Friday, March 11th, 2011

If you haven’t heard of Munchkin, I don’t really know what you’re doing on this website.  On the other hand, if you haven’t heard of Axe Cop, I can forgive you.  Axe Cop is a web comic that’s little over a year old.  Axe Cop is about a cop who’s primary weapon is an axe.  Axe Cop is also written by a 7 year old.  Suffice to say, Axe Cop is one of the zaniest comics you’ll ever read and I bet you’ll love it.

It seems that Steve Jackson and Axe Cop have teamed up to make Munchkin Axe Cop.  The zany anarchy that is Axe Cop is super congruent with the zany anarchy that is Munchkin.  It’s a match made in heaven, and it will be hilarious.

Do yourself a favor and read Axe Cop.  And then buy Munchkin.

CanGames This Weekend!

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Who wants to play games all weekend? Pick me, pick me! The store’s going to be at CanGames too! We’ll be having all sorts of tax-free deals all weekend! CanGames has always been a blast! It’s always full of great deals, and hard-to-find items. You know those games that you see every once in a while, and they look neat, but they’ve been out of print for 20 years? Yeah, they have those. You know those miniatures you needed for your army, but they’ve always been too expensive? Yeah, they have those ON SALE. You know that really complicated board game none of your buddies ever want to play with you – people here will play. It’s going to be epic!
