Hey Folks! Spinmaster has done it again and launched a new series of Bakugan called Gundalian Invasion, or Series 3! With these new Bakugan comes two brand new types of Bakugan: Bakugan Battle Gear and Special Evolution Bakugan, as well as some new rules! So here is a quick primer for everyone:
What you need to play the game:
- 3 Bakugan
- 3 Metal Gate Cards (one of each colour: Gold, Silver & Copper)
- 3 Ability Cards (one of each colour: Green, Red, Blue)
- (Optional) Your choice of a total of 2 Bakugan Trap or Battle Gear (or a mixture equaling 2). So, a brawler may have 2 Bakugan Trap. Or, a brawler may have 2 Battle Gear. And, a brawler may have 1 Bakugan Trap and 1 Battle Gear.
What is a Battle Gear?
Battle Gear is used to increase your overall strength in battle. Magnetically connect to existing Bakugan and unleash your most powerful attack. Battle Gear includes Jetkor, Airkor, Battle Turbine, and tons more. They are used as supplements in battle just like Bakugan Trap, but are not considered sole Bakugan by themselves.
How do I use Battle Gear in battle?
Bakugan Battle Gear are played during a battle (from your unused pile). Place your Battle Gear on the back of your Bakugan to open it. It may also be opened on a Gate Card. Add the G-Power revealed on the inside of the Battle Gear to your battling Bakugan. If your Bakugan’s attribute matches either of the attributes on your Battle Gear reference card, then you get that ability as well; Or, if your Battle Gear matches the color of the Gate Card being battled on (Gold, Silver, or Copper. Also see Battle Gear Attributes) you choose any one ability on the Battle Gear reference card to use in this battle.
Battle Gear move like regular Bakugan. At the end of a battle, they move to your used pile. When you have no Bakugan to roll, all of your Bakugan, Bakugan Trap, and Battle Gear move to your unused pile.
Each player may use a total of 2 Bakugan Trap or Battle Gear (or a mixture equaling 2). So, a brawler may have 2 Bakugan Trap. Or, a brawler may have 2 Battle Gear. And, a brawler may have 1 Bakugan Trap and 1 Battle Gear.
What are the Battle Gear Attributes?
Battle Gear come in one of three Attributes: Gold, Silver, or Copper. Not only are the Battle Gear’s highlights colored appropriately to their Attribute, but they also have an icon painted on them to tell the brawler what kind of attribute they are:
Gold Attribute – Looks like a target, or crosshair.
Silver Attribute – Looks like a missle, or triangle.
Copper Attribute – Looks like a cat’s eye.
If you Battle Gear has the same attribute as the Gate Card you are battling on then you may choose to either: 1) If your Bakugan’s attribute matches either of the attributes on your reference card, you get the ability as well, or 2) If you Battle Gear matches the attribute of the Gate Card you are battling on you can choose any one ability on the Battle Gear reference card to use in this battle.
How many Battle Gear can I use in a regular Bakugan battle?
Each player may use a total of 2 Bakugan Trap or Battle Gear (or a mixture equaling 2). So, a brawler may have 2 Bakugan Trap. Or, a brawler may have 2 Battle Gear. And, a brawler may have 1 Bakugan Trap and 1 Battle Gear.
What is a Battle Gear Reference Card?
A Battle Gear Reference Card is a special card that comes with every Battle Gear piece. These cards aren’t put in your used or unused pile. They are kept nearby so you can see any special rules it may have for the specific Battle Gear.
Do I need to have a Battle Gear Reference Card for my Battle Gear at all times?
No. You can use Battle Gear in its basic form to boost G-Powers of the Bakugan that you use it with. However, it is recommended that you always have a Battle Gear Reference Card for each Battle Gear piece in order to take advantage of the additional abilities the card allows you to have.
Does the Battle Gear used in a battle have to be used specifically with a certain Bakugan?
No. Battle Gear is interchangeable and may be used with any Bakugan to boost its G-Power. If the Battle Gear cannot open on a Bakugan (such as Season 1 and 2 Bakugan) simply use the Gate Card to activate it.
What is a Special Evolution Bakugan?
A Special Evolution Bakugan is an evolved form of an original, or previous state, Bakugan. For example, Quake Dragonoid is an evolved form of Dragonoid, and Splight is an evolved form of Dharak.
How do I use a Special Evolution Bakugan in battle?
At the beginning of a battle, Special Evolution Bakugan don’t start off in a player’s used or unused pile. They may come from their overall collection not currently being played in battle. To get a Special Evolution Bakugan into the game, you must meet two conditions (found on the Special Evolution Reference Card.) First, the Power Level of the game must be at least equal to the Power Level on the card. Second, you must have a Bakugan in your used or unused pile from which your Bakugan evolves (also shown on the reference card.) If you meet both conditions, you may skip your turn and swap the Special Evolution Bakugan for the one that it evolves from.
NOTE: Each Special Evolution Bakugan comes with a reference card. These cards aren’t put in your used or unused pile. They are kept nearby so you can see any special rules it might have.
Does my Special Evolution Bakugan have to be a part of the 3 Bakugan needed to play a regular battle?
No. Special Evolution Bakugan do not have to be in your 3 dedicated battling Bakugan. They do not have to be in your used or unused pile. They may come from anywhere in your collection.
What is a Special Evolution Bakugan Reference Card?
Each Special Evolution Bakugan comes with a reference card. These cards aren’t put in your used or unused pile. They are kept nearby so you can see any special rules it might have. These cards direct the brawler what is needed to bring the Special Evolution Bakugan into battle and any other additional abilities it has.
Is there a limit to how many times I can evolve my Bakugan in battle to a Special Evolution Bakugan?
No. As long as the battle meets the conditions of the Special Evolution Card you may evolve each one of your three Bakugan into its Special Evolution form.
Well that’s it for the new rules Primer. If you still have any questions or are unsure of how to use any of the new Bakugan or about a specific rule you can check out the Bakugan rules here and the Official Bakugan FAQ here!

This is to make sure all trades are fair (No Tigrerra’s for Metalfencers).

Time Limit: When time is called, each player will have 5 shots left to try to win or get as many gate cards as they can. At the end of the 5 shots, the player wiht the most gate cards wins. In case of ties, it will go to a shootout.

So stay tuned to our blog for more updates coming soon!
Wowee Zowee! Great tournament, you guys, great tournament. We played 3 rounds of rough and tumble Bakugan with 19 competetors to determine who is the undisputed Bakugan player in all of Ottawa (and perhaps Canada (maybe even the world.)) It tested our weather prediction skills, our math skills, and our ability to actually understand how Bakugan works! Anyway, here are some pictures from the day, and our winners!
That’s right folks! The next Bakugan Tournament is here, and it’s the biggest we’ve had so far! Toys on Fire is raising the bar to start off the summer with a bang!
We’ve got a bigger tournament, more prizes and loads more Bakugan!
In the past, we’ve only been able to take 16 players and in rare cases 20. This time, we’re going all out and taking 24 players!

A couple rules clarifications for those of you who get stuck sometimes when the official rules aren’t too clear. This information is to help you find the true meaning of Bakugan, which of course is to have fun. Hope this helps guys and girls! Have fun and play fair, I hope to see you all at the March Break Mega Bowl!
1) My ball didn’t open up on the card, does it count as standing? If the magnet is stuck onto the card, regardless of whether the Bakugan is open or not, it counts. If the magnet is not stuck on the card, it doesn’t count..
2) What is the best/most powerful/coolest/most awesome Bakugan? The one that wins the battle! Seriously though, every Bakugan is good at different times if you use it well. The highest G-Power Bakugan is generally considered the “best” but there are lots of times when smaller is better. Even the lowest G-Power Bakugan can win on Duck and Win. Personally, I like Preyus and Skyress cause they just look so cool…
3) Can I play with both Series 1 and Series 2 cards? Sure. This is your game, so as long as you and your opponent both agree, feel free to use both cards. A few of the Series 1 Gate cards will be really over-powered if you play this way, but they will still work. If you decide to go this route, I would ignore HSP and stick with the Series 2 victory condition of winning 3 Gate cards. Over time, you’ll likely stop using Series 1 cards as the game moves forward and more folks play with Series 2 rules. Series 1 Bakugan will work well in either set of rules. If you want to update your game play to Series 2, the most affordable way to do it is to buy one of the “card-only” products (one of which comes with a whopping 30 new Series 2 cards!).
4) How do I use the attribute switching Preyas? Use it as normal. Each time it opens up, it will change to a new attribute. The player doesn’t get to change it by hand during the game by spinning it – it will change all by itself, so whatever attribute symbol is shown when it opens is the one it is for that battle.
5) What is the highlight around one of the attribute bonuses on the Gate card for? You can safely ignore that… for now… That is called the “highlighted bonus” and there will be cards that come out in the future (as well as Bakugan) that will use that number. When playing a collectible game like Bakugan, things will get updated from time to time, and some things that might not currently make sense (or that might seem really weak) will get updated to keep the game fresh and exciting. If you’re playing for HSP as well, you can use the highlighted value as the HSP value for the card, but remember, the HSP value will always be lower then Series 1 cards.
6) Rolling Bakugan is hard. OK, this isn’t exactly a “question” but it seems that lots of folks want to know the “best” way to roll a Bakugan. There is one really good trick to getting Bakugan to open up on cards – when you roll the bakugan “spin” it like a top with the magnet side down while flicking it towards the Gate cards. This small trick is a HUGE help in getting Bakugan to open up on cards as the magnet will almost always make contact with the metal in any card it touches! Advanced players can use this trick to curve a Bakugan so that it hits the Gate card that is furthest away as well. But the only way to get really good at getting your Bakugan to open up is to practice (which is fun all by itself anyway!).
When I win a battle, do I get to keep my opponent’s card/Bakugan forever? Definitely not! The gate cards are used to keep track of who is winning (first player to win 3 battles wins the game), but after the game, all game pieces are given back to their owners.
10) Can you play with 2 Bakugan that are the same? Sure. You’ll still need to have 3 to play the game, but if 2 of them are the same or if your opponent has one just like yours, that’s fine. It all just depends on how you want to play.
11) Who wins in a tie? It goes into Sudden Fury! Each player in the tie take turns rolling until one lands on the card that was flipped up. When one person’s Bakugan stands, the other person gets once chance to land his bakugan on the card. If he does, continue Sudden Fury! If not, the person who got thier bakugan on the card wins.
12) When I play an ability card that gives a G-Power bonus does my opponent also get the bonus? No. The card should always tell you how things work pretty clearly. For instance, it will say something like “…Your Bakugan gains G-Power based on its Attribute.” – so it only affects your Bakugan. There might be cards in the future that affect all Bakugan battling, but the card will clearly state that.
13) How many times can I use an Ability card in a game? Once. Then they go to your “Used Pile.” There are some clever ways to get a card back from your used pile to use again, but generally, just one use of an ability card per game.
14) Can I play with all of my Ability and Gate cards? The current rules are that you play with 3 gate and 3 ability cards. This makes choosing what to play with an important part of your strategy. But as I always say, if you and your opponent agree, you can play however you want. But as a warning, playing a game with 100 ability cards could take all day…
15) When I play the Doom card do I get to keep my opponent’s Bakugan for good? No. The Doom card just takes your opponent’s Bakugan out of the game, not into your pocket!

It’s the time of the season, to get ready for our Bakugan tournament coming next Saturday, June 28th. I hope you have all picked out your bestest and favourite Bakugans and cards. For those of you who are hazy about the rules, here is a quick refresher!
Put one game card facedown in the center of the battle arena in the slot furthest away from you. Players take turns shooting Bakugan Battle Brawlers with the youngest player going first. Players must shoot from at least two card lengths away. Players shoot until any two opponents’ Bakugan “stand” on the card, meaning magnetically fasten and open, and battle.
To battle: Compare the “G Power” of the battling Bakugan (it’s indicated on the sphere). Flip the card over and each player adds or
subtracts the G Power Boost shown on the card. For example, 350 G Power plus 150 G Power Boost equals 500 total G Power.
The player with the highest G Power wins the battle, capturing the card and the defeated Bakugan.
Players battle until all the cards are captured. Each player then counts up the total Holo Sector Points, or HSP, of his captured cards (HSP are marked on each card) and adds 100 HSP for each captured Bakugan. The player with the most HSP wins.
If you stand two of your Bakugan on a card, you automatically capture that card. If players tie in a battle, each player keeps his Bakugan and the card is removed from play. You cannot shoot captured Bakugan.
Alright Folks, you’ve been brawling on the schoolyard with your friends or at each others houses. Some of you may think you’re Mr. Hotshot himself, Shun. Well here’s your chance to fight for whats right, and Baku-brawl against some of the other would-be hotshots. That’s right, Toys on Fire is having their very first BAKUGAN TOURNAMENT!
So here’s the lowdown on the shindig:
Date and Time: June 28th, 2-4PM
Recommended Ages: All Ages! (Long as they know how to play Bakugan and have their own)
Registration: To register you’ll have to come to the store (sorry all you online folks, then again it’s hard to participate in a tournament if you’re halfway around the world). There will be a registration fee of $1 if you register before June 22nd. from June 22nd afterwards the fee will be $2. Also, we’re limiting the number of participants to 20 players, so if you want to attend, register ASAP!
Tournament Rules:
We will be providing Arena’s to facilitate play.
Each player will be expected to bring thier own 3 Bakugan and cards.
The tournament will be run in a Round Robin Style. The top player from each table will play a final round. The top 3 players of the final match will get a prize each. Check out the panel on the side for a list of prizes!
There will be several Brawlmasters (judges) monitoring the matches to make sure they are fair.
* The use of shooters will be allowed; however shooters must shoot from off the arena!
Changing Bakugan and cards between rounds will be allowed. However once a round starts, you will not be able to change your Bakugan or cards until after it’s over.
Draw Rules: Every player who registers will also get a raffle ticket to enter for the 3 draw prizes.
Also, throughout the tournament if any tournament participant buys a Bakugan, they will receive an extra raffle ticket(s) when they present their receipt to Brawlmaster Steve. You’ll get 1 raffle ticket for every $10 spent on a Bakugan (1 for $10 or under, 2 for $20, 3 for $30, etc).
We will be doing draw prizes throughout the tournament, if a ticket is called and no one claims it we will proceed to draw another ticket instead.
Here’s a picture of the prizes that we’ll be giving out!
Additional Notes:
If you are to leave your child here for the tournament, please leave a number we can contact with your child in case we need to do so.
Parents and Kids are responsible for watching their own Bakugan. We are not responsible for any lost or stolen items. One recommendation would be to put a piece of tape on the front side of cards (the side with all the point values) with the owners initials written on it. This way when the card is placed on the table for play, each player will know whose card is who’s after the game.
Most Important Point:
This tournament is for children to have fun! Remember that!
Glorious day, Anton is going to game 2. We are gona need his shot blocking awesomeness should we travel into a parallel dimension where we can make it to the next series.
We got in some cool stuff today, and restocked some old stuff. I think the best way for me to do this is in point form in no particular order, so here we go!
Remember how we got in the awesome Picard in Command Chair figure? Well we just got a special San Diego Comic Con Exclusive Commander Kirk in Chair. As we know all great men sit in chairs, and the only true measure of how great that man is… is the size of his chair.
We have re-stocked our Webkinz again, lil’ kinz mice and webkinz tiger snakes are back in for the 3rd or 4th time after selling out in just hours!
DC Trinity Series 1 is in stock, its got Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Ra’s al Ghul, at $14.95 each. Buy all four and get them at $47.95, big savings and also cheaper shipping if you are buying long distance!
There are some new Transformers in store today, they probably wont last too long. Stealth Bumblebee, Premium Jazz, Stockade, and Premium Barricade. They can be seen here.
The new set of Chaotic, Zenith of the Hive, is now in stock in store and also online. The prices for them are the same as the first series of booster packs, $3.95 per pack and $84.95 for a whole box of packs. Check it all out here!
The new Winnie the Pooh Pee-a-Pooh series is finally out. It appears they are re-releasing the first series with a couple new animals as well. They call it Series 1 -- Special Edition. They are all priced at $1.77 each, consequently $2 after GST and PST.
Oh yeah and our Montreal counterparts put up a shameless Bakugan video on youtube. Check it out below. I cannot help but be mesmerized by the music.
I hope to see you all at our hockey card trading day coming Saturday April 19th from 2-4PM, it looks like I am going to try and bring Mighty Ducks or perhaps even Mighty Ducks 2. Is there a Mighty Ducks 3? If there is, it is probably like Ducks in Space with little Charlie having animatronic arms that can shoot the puck so fast it sends Goldberg back to his oversized crib. I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve a hankering for Emilio Estevez.
Well I think that is all for now! Until next time…
If Steve is done plugging his WoW card game addiction, I would like to take some time to write about a few random things while I have the chance.
As you’ve seen, our ever popular Hockey Card Trading Day is upcomming, infact its April 19th, yup, only 10 days away! I hope everyone is ready, and will have their traders with them. It should be a blast. I know I normally bust a box of something at our card days…Who knows what I will open this time…Last time, you guys saw me open a box of Black Diamond, and get nothing of note…Hopefully my luck will be changed this time around.
We have not received any new hockey products lately, I am just as upset about that as you guys. But! There is good news on the card stock front in the store, I just re-filled the Ottawa Senators single cards in the shelf! I know you guys love the single cards, hopefully there is something for everyone. And, if not, remember, just ask one of the stff members if we have something, chances are, if we do not have it right then, I can find it for you. Remeber that for our card day.
We hope to have a brand new display of hockey McFarlanes before the trading card day, all you hockey lovers will be drooling over all the sweet pieces the store is hoping to get. I know I went nuts when I saw the list. If you want, check out of E-Store and look at the McFarlane hockey section, the figures are really well done.
Ok…Enough about cards, we had received the new Webkinz in late last week, and in no time, we sold out of the Lil Kinz mouse, it was like, not even 48 hours later, and we sold like 50, well done! Guess they were quite popular. I really like the chicken, doesn;t seem like a lot of people agree with me on that one though.
For you Littlest Pet Shop fans, we got a few new ones in today, I can;t remember exactly which ones, but their new, and soft. Buy them so I don’t….Seriously.
Let’s see…What else…Well, spring has finally arrived here, the snow is melting, and I see more and more people coming out of hibernation. I hope that we will be busy within the next couple of weeks as people purchase new summer toys and what not…
O yeah…While I am still going, we still have an abundance of Bakugan 3 packs, the blue and tan packs, at $24.95, which is a pretty good deal for 3 Bakugan. I can’t believe how popular these things still are! I guess it’s here to stay!
So, the Sens play their first playoff game tonight, no one thinks they can beat the Penguins, well, I think otherwise. But that is another rant for another day…There is no support in this city! GO SENS GO BABY!!! WOOOO!!!!
Well…now my hands hurt from typing all that out…So, in keeping with tradition, here’s another card from my collection for all to see:
