Devil May Cry? Doubtful.

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

He should be smiling, really. The new Devil May Cry figures from Play Arts came out, and just like all other Play Arts figures, they are the bees knees. It’s a good thing to be the the bees knees, by the way. Highly detailed, and actually reasonably big (10 inches,) these are pretty nifty. Devil May Cry fans don’t actually get a lot of merch ’round these parts, so this is a nice addition to any DMC collection. As far as game news goes, apparently they’re planning a reboot of the franchise made by the same dudes who made Heavenly Sword.

GoGo Tournament 8 Approaches!

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Because you asked, we’re announcing the 8th in the extremely popular series of Gogo Tournaments!  The promised day for this one will be Saturday, September 25th from 1 – 3:30 p.m., and admission is $5.00.  These tournaments area always popular, and always fill up fast so register early to make sure you get in!  As always each participant will need ten (10) gogos to compete, and there will be prizes for gogo prowess… so bring your A-game (and your B-ball, B-boy, or B-king) and come on over for an afternoon of Fun!

Tips & Tricks: Every tournament we try to make sure that no gogo gets lost, but they do have a habit of disappearing.  Some of the best ways we’ve found to make sure your gogos go home with you are to make a unique mark in ink or marker (or even a tiny sticker) on your gogos so that you know which are yours, or if you don’t want to mark them (and you have lots) bring only one colour of gogos to make it easier to remember.

How do I improve my game? in most games, you can only play with ten gogos, but between games you can switch up the ones you use.  Why?  Because every game is different!  Take bowling and K.O., for example.  For both games you set up nine gogos on the field and throw a tenth.  In both games, the one you throw should be big and bulky, like Eco or Alkaline, but in bowling you want the other nine to have tiny feet like Cody, Angiru, or Dare so that they all fall down easier.  In K.O., however, if they all fall down easily, you’ll be out pretty quick, so you want ones with heavy bases like Eco or H-83.  Games like onlineTarget, or battle want a good mix of different types of gogos, so you can see what works best for you, because these games are all in how you throw (or flick) the gogo.  Try moving your gogos from different angles to try and get better results.  As long as you’re behind the line, it counts!  Our last game is different.  Top speed uses only one gogo to bounce around the race course in the fewest number of turns.  Check the stats in your gogo sticker book for a gogo that is really fast and bouncy (the blue and orange bars) if you want a top score in top speed!

LITTLE BIG PLANET – Sequel Beta and Figures!

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

The famous Destructoid reports that there’s extra special news for a handful of Little Big Planet fans!
LittleBigPlanet 2 is on its way to us this November, so fans of the first game don’t have long to wait. However, if you’re lucky, you just might find yourself playing the beta a little sooner — if you were a true enthusiast of the first game, that is.

The PlayStation forums have made an announcement that beta invites are going out this week. Will you get one? Well, here’s what they had to say:

We will be sending out invitations to the LittleBigPlanet 2 beta during this week to users who’ve been really active in LittleBigPlanet (PS3™). So if you have been a busy Sackboy™ or girl then an invite might be coming your way. This decision has now been made; unfortunately we are not able to recruit any further Beta Testers at present.

Well, makes sense to me. I guess if you didn’t put in your time with the first game, you’re screwed. I wish more betas worked this way. If so, not only would I be the first b*tch in line for Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, I’d also get stock in D3 Publisher and my own gold-plated giant ant.

Of course, not every fan will be able to get on-board at the beta level, but for anyone who still needs that little something extra to tide them over until the second game, we’ve got three new items that might fit the bill. They’ve just arrived and they are as awesome as they are adorable! Here’s a look at Mezco’s LITTLE BIG PLANET 4-inch figures!

Oh! And! You can also pick up a copy of the Playstation 3 game over at Amazon if you’re uninitiated or pre-order the highly-anticipated sequel. Here are the links!

Montreal Comic Con Wrap-Up!

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

The Montreal Comic Con has come and gone and we had a blast! Our booth was set up, we sold a ton of awesome items and we got to meet fellow fans, see a bunch of geekdom celebrities and watch a parade of costumes stroll past! Here’s a look at our CMDStore/Toys on Fire booth!

On the day of the Con, the Gazette posted a great article about the events going down at Place Bonaventure!

If, like me, you’ve spent years wondering who would win if Batman and Spiderman pretended to fight using folding chairs and histrionics, then this weekend’s Montreal Comic-Con at Place Bonaventure is for you.

Featuring superhero wrestling by local pros, a costume masquerade and the chance to fire Nerf guns at Stormtroopers, imagine someone melted down the entirety of pop culture and used it to build an amusement park.

The convention, run by Alex La Prova and Oscar Yazedjian, is in its third year. The inaugural event drew about 800 people, but this year, La Prova expects between 5,000 and 6,000 people. “We actually expanded the show floor to close to 40,000 square feet … to accommodate all the extra events and the increase in popularity,” he said.

La Prova attributes the rising interest to the way comic books have infiltrated pop culture. “It’s video games, it’s toys, it’s (Hollywood). … Every big medium these days has a direct link and tie to comic books,” La Prova said.

As such, the event spans a wide variety of interests.

The time-travelling DeLorean from the Back to the Future films will be on display, Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh! Tournaments will be held, and special guests include the French voice cast of The Simpsons and horror hostess Elvira.

And, obviously, Star Wars. Along with appearances by actors Peter Mayhew, Billy Dee Williams and Maria de Aragon, the Con will be graced by the Quebec-based Imperial Fortress unit of the 501st Legion, an international Star Wars costuming group that makes appearances for charity. About 15 Fortress members will be appearing at the Con, member Stephen Beaupre says.

“We just got some Nerf guns, and we’re going to do a Stormtrooper shootout. So, if people want to give money, they’ll be able to blast at a Stormtrooper,” he explained.

But don’t expect to see any Jedi Knights, adds Beaupre, whose own costumes include a snowtrooper, bounty hunter Dengar and a clone trooper. “Some of us do Rebel stuff (on the side), but we don’t really talk about it.”

Of course, plenty of attention will be paid to comic pros, especially Montrealers.

“We like to (promote) local artists,” La Prova said. “They all have their tables to sketch and sign.”

“It’s nice to have a local Con,” artist Kelly Tindall added. “The fans get to know you after a while.”

Tindall, a Montrealer whose creations include paranormal investigator Archie Snow and webcomic That’s So Kraven, which replaces Raven Simone’s sitcom character with a Spiderman supervillain like a psychotic mash-up album, has attended several conventions and finds Montreal’s has its own unique charm.

“There’s not really anything like it here,” he said. “It’s a big draw for creators, too, because Montreal is such a lovely city.”

Tindall will spend the Con drawing fan requests of characters both popular and obscure, occasionally in bizarre situations.

“It’s like any other trade show, except instead of trying to hock your Shamwows, you get to draw pictures of an overweight Galactus, or Apocalypse and his four My Little Ponies.”

And don’t forget! Comic up NEXT in Montreal Cons is our very own event, the MONTREAL TOYCON, a convention where you can expect to get some great deals on awesome items from Bakugan to NHL Hockey, Beyblade to the DC Universe. It all goes down October 17th, 2010 and you can check out the Official ToyCon site for more details!
